Abstract

Purpose: to assess the prospects for the development of rail transport in a large metropolis (based on the materials of St. Petersburg. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that in modern conditions of development of urban transport systems, the demands of citizens — residents of the metropolis for the quality of transportation by urban public transport, in particular, for mobility (speed), comfort, safety, and environmental cleanliness, are increasing. These requirements determine the growing propensity of the population of the megalopolis to use public transport services, which ensures a gradual trend of reducing the use of motor transport, reducing trips by private car transport and, as a result, reducing exhaust emissions, negative effects on the ecology of the megalopolis, reducing gas pollution and noise levels from transport in large cities. Methods: statistical systematization, observation, analysis of statistical data sets, selective observation, analysis of normative legal acts, descriptive analysis of reporting data of transport organizations. Results: a rating assessment of the use and demand for individual routes of rail ground transport in St. Petersburg metropolis was carried out, recommendations were given on updating and modernizing the tram route network in St. Petersburg, a system of indicators was proposed that allow implementing a model for managing public transport services by ground rail electric transport, application points were determined efforts to ensure the growth of the importance of investors in the future. Practical results: effective measures for the modernization and renewal of the transport network for a large metropolis, coupled with improved indicators of public transport services, are proposed.
